Climbing to success one rung at a time

Danny is a 17-year-old young man who began participating in the Lighthouse Teen School to Work Transition Program 3 years ago. Danny has made huge strides and Lighthouse staff are so proud of the successes he has had. When Danny started the program, he was very quiet and shy.Today, he is a leader. Danny told us he did not have any friends prior to coming to the teen program, and now he has several friends with whom he enjoys hanging out, playing video and computer games, and learning. He was in a home-bound for school program, but he is now in school half days and doing well in class. Although Danny is a computer novice, he is now learning to use an iPad with VoiceOver (speech access). Danny says he has had many new experiences and that he “always has a good time” at the Lighthouse.

This past summer, Danny did something no one ever thought he would do—he climbed a jungle gym independently. We can’t wait to see what he does next. Keep climbing Danny—and keep encouraging your peers to do so as well.Danny also completed a work experience at the SPCA this past summer, and during the Teen Summer Graduation ceremony, the Transition Program Coordinator gave Danny a wonderful letter of recommendation.

The letter says:

July 17, 2014 To whom it may concern: It is my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this letter of recommendation for Mr. Daniel (last name omitted). As Daniel’s transition supervisor, I observed him working at the SPCA in New Port Richey, Florida. Daniel is an outstanding worker who I could consistently depend on. He completed all work assignments with an outstanding attitude. I appreciated his interest in understanding the expectations of the work assignments so he could successfully complete the tasks. Daniel demonstrates the character and qualities that you look for in an employee. He is independent, enthusiastic, kind-hearted, responsible, and talented. It is my opinion that Daniel will quickly become a valuable member of any organization. He has a pleasant personality that will make him accepted by the people with whom he works. I am pleased to give him this positive recommendation. Kenny Ratzlaff Transition Program Coordinator Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind.

You Can Help

Lighthouse programs and services are made possible by our generous donors and supporters. We need one-time donations and regular donations so we are able to provide important Lighthouse programs. Your donation helps people who are visually impaired and blind with developing independent living skills such as using the white cane, braille reading and writing, computers and other technical devices, and safe cooking.

You can help in several ways:

  • Please join our “Friends of the Lighthouse” annual giving program. It’s easy to become a member—just give $50 a year. Learn about becoming a friend of the Lighthouse today.
