PORT RICHEY, FL – Jan. 16, 2016 – The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind has received a $2,500 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation. The TD Charitable Foundation grant will be used to assist visually impaired and blind teens living in Pasco County by helping to fund the Lighthouse’s School to Work Transition Program. The purpose of this program is to provide specialized training to help visually impaired and blind teens prepare for living independently as adults, higher education, and employment. Many visually impaired teens drop out of school, and visually impaired teens who find employment are paid less than their peers, with or without a disability.
The Lighthouse’s School to Work Program provides year round specialized training to help visually impaired and blind youths ages 14 to 22 transition into adult life. Each participant is individually evaluated and a plan is developed that focuses on their unique needs and goals. Clients participate in group-based activities and training one day a week after school, one Saturday a month, and on teacher planning days. An intensive 5-week summer program provides additional training and a paid work experience.
The program includes the development of communications skills, home and personal management, financial management, the use of computers and assistive technology, social skills training and activities, and job readiness counseling and guidance. Behind-the-scene tours provided by local businesses and a community-based summer volunteer work experience provide the teens with practical work experience and knowledge about businesses and employer expectations. Vocational rehabilitation is key to this program as over 70% of adults with vision impairment are not employed.
“The Lighthouse appreciates the TD Charitable Foundation’s contribution to this program that provides much needed services to teens who are visually impaired and blind living in our community,” said Sylvia Perez, Chief Executive Officer.
