Independent Living Skills

The Independent Living Skills Program provides individual and group vision rehabilitation to adults and seniors to promote optimal independence in all activities of daily living, and includes assistance with coping and adjustment to vision loss and low vision*.

Participants are provided with training in sensory skills development and the use of adaptive skills and techniques to function independently in their daily life, including medication management, money identification/management, personal management and grooming, meal preparation, home care, fall prevention, safe movement/travel skills, the use of assistive technology, and sewing (making minor repairs by hand).

This program also covers:

  • Travel/Movement Skills
  • Use of telephones and other communications devices use of writing guides for checks, letters and signature
  • Techniques for coping with vision loss
  • Information and referral to community resources

* A 5-7 session Adjustment to Vision Loss Program (AVL) is also available at the Lighthouse. The goal of AVL is accepting and adjusting to vision loss and improving self-esteem.
